Mentorship In Louise Erdrichs Trackss Essay Example For Students
Mentorship In Louise Erdrichs Trackss Essay Mentorship: From Childhood to the Man Louise Erdrich investigates the internal clashes of an Indian clan in her novel Tracks. Before the finish of the novel, the tribesââ¬â¢ accord is broken by the bait of the white manââ¬â¢s cash and land change. The divisions among the clan are typified by the physical detachment of the Chippewa individuals into various hues that compare to their distinctive land distributions. Notwithstanding, one section specifically diverges from the tribeââ¬â¢s propensity towards disunity. Section 5, in which Nanapush and Eli conquer their disparities and join trying to stay away from starvation loans want to the dismal arrangement of occasions all through Tracks which show struggle creating from solidarity. The extraordinary blizzard they experience together ties them as well as powers Eli to go to his Chippewa establishes so as to endure. In Chapter 5, we see the peak of the connection among Nanapush and Eli. Like every other person in the book, Eli appears at Nanapushââ¬â¢ habitation to look for shrewd insight. Lamentably for Eli, Nanapush isn't astounded by the afflictions in which Eli is encountering. We see this inside the start of the part. We see the internal identity of Eli, attempting to get the consideration of the man, Nanapush. Eli attempts to pick up Nanapushââ¬â¢ consideration; by offering remarks faintly and slamming his head against the table. At the same time Nanapush is mindful, but at the same time isn't engaging the hissy fit of the youngster. The ejections through the exchange at long last spring out when Eli begins with, ââ¬Å"How much a man endures?â⬠Nanapushââ¬â¢ reaction is little however amazing by just expressing, ââ¬Å"What Man?â⬠(p.97) Nanapush r. . ves from what may feel like just a season. Also, thatââ¬â¢s more often than not. They are normally placed into your life for you to learn and develop explicit attributes about yourself. Be that as it may, now and then individuals come into your life in what may appear to be a lifetime. These sort of connections are based upon continually. With Eli and Nanapush, they set out upon a relationship that expand upon the grounds that they required each other to endure. Eli required Nanapush for astuteness to endure and adapt to the afflictions and exercises of life. Nanapush required Eli to genuinely make due in the desperate period of scarcity. Also, when we take a gander at the after effects of the exercises that Nanapush provided for Eli, I understood that Eli at that point ventured forward to coach his more youthful sibling. So after the exercises were over among Nanapush and Eli, so the death of the light has started for Eli to impart the knowledge to Nector.

Essay on Downfall and Denial in Streetcar Named Desire...
Downfall and Denial in Streetcar Named Desire and Glass Menagerie Tennessee Williams allows the main characters in the plays, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie, to live miserable lives, which they first try to deny and later try to change. The downfall and denial of the Southern gentlewoman is a common theme in both plays. The characters, Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire and Amanda from The Glass Menagerie are prime examples. Blanche and Amanda have had, and continue to have, many struggles in their lives. The problem is that Williams never lets the two women work through these problems and move on. The two ladies are allowed to destroy themselves and Williams invites the audience to watch them inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Amanda comments sarcastically, at the end of the play, that Tom shouldnt think about his poor mother and sister (Williams, T.G.M., 9.114.1-3). She tries to push her problems off on him rather than deal with them herself. By laying the blame on Tom, she feels as though she did nothing wrong an d that the familyââ¬â¢s problems have been caused by others. If the two women had just accepted that they were also to blame, they could have moved on with their lives. Both Blanche and Amandas biggest problem is that they deny the truth. Blanche denies her drinking problem. She also indirectly denies the fact that she was a whore, mainly through omitting it from her memory. Blanche also tries to deny the reality of Stellaââ¬â¢s situation as evidenced by her comment that, I take for granted that you still have sufficient memory of Belle Reve to find this place and these poker players impossible to live with (Williams, A.S.N.D., 4.70.1-3). She denies that she ever sank lower than Stella when, in truth, she was much worse. She was the one who lost her job for sleeping with a seventeen year old and was kicked out of the town by the mayor for being a prostitute. She then had the gall to lecture Stella on her choice of men. You cant have forgotten that much of our up bringing, Stella, that you just suppose that any part of a gentleman is in his (Stanleyââ¬â¢s) nature! (Williams, A.S.N.D., 4.71.13-18)
The Presentation of Conflict in War Literature Free Essays
Morally conflicted characters are present in all three texts, as individuals struggle to make a Judgment between what they perceive as right and wrong. In Regeneration Rivers experiences an Internal ethical conflict which Intensifies as the novel progresses. Whilst observing fellow therapist Holland work, Rivers is forced to question the moral legitimacy of his war contributions. We will write a custom essay sample on The Presentation of Conflict in War Literature or any similar topic only for you Order Now Holland employs an intense form of therapy on voiceless patient Calla. A dream he has shortly after the experience brings this dilemma to the front of his mind, ââ¬Ëin the dream he had stood in Wellheadââ¬â¢s place. The dream seemed to be sayingâ⬠¦ Donââ¬â¢t latter yourself. There Is no distinction. ââ¬Ë Electro Convulsive Therapy (ACT) was, and still Is, a controversial treatment. Frequently used as a form of social control, and the uncertainty surrounding its effects, had led it to become a source of great fear for those it was enforced upon. The language used in this passage by Holland emphasis the assertion of his control over Calla. Barker uses several imperatives and modal verbs, such as you must behave as becomes the hero I expect you to beââ¬â¢ and you must talk before you leave meââ¬â¢. The tone here is very authoritative and could make readers feel intrusive whilst reading. Similarly, in Birdsong the main character, Stephen, experiences the horrors of war and although initially emotionally detached grows to care about the men he is serving with. The fate of his comrades fuels disdain for the war leading him to denounce it as ââ¬Ëan exploration of how far men can be degradedââ¬â¢. As Paul Salad (1999) says the pure fury and intensity of the imagery created isâ⬠¦ Rebounded shocking and, ultimately, desperately uncomfortable to readââ¬â¢, and the poignancy of the description by Faults creates an immense Impact on the reader. Despite this when Stephen Is Injured and offered a desk Job whilst recovering n hospital he Is ââ¬Ëappalled at the Idea of being separated from the men he had fought with. He despised the war, but he could not leaveââ¬â¢. This is similar to Swanson in Regeneration, who writes a poem with the lines When are you going back to them again? Are they not still your brothers through our blood?. This moral conflict can be amplified beyond the individual. In the poem Easter 1 91 6 W. B Yeats explores the cost of freedom. The issue of Home Rule had dominated Irish Politics for several years until eventually coming to a head In April 1916, when a group of rebels seized the UAPITA city of Dublin. Yeats demonstrates his mixed feelings with the oxymoron phrase ââ¬Ëa terrible beauty is bornââ¬â¢, by personifying this freedom with the verb ââ¬Ëbornââ¬â¢, Yeats seems to be implying that the cause has taken on a life of its own and those who created it no longer have control. Through the simile ââ¬Ëas a mother names her child when sleep at last has come on limbs that had run wildââ¬â¢, Yeats suggests that the rebel leaders had childlike enthusiasm for their cause, but Like children were naive The true brilliance of Yeats poem is, as Decline Kibbled (1995) said, is the honesty in which he debates the issueââ¬â¢, this honesty makes the poem more emotive and, moreover, gives modern readers an insight into those turbulent times. The outbreak of war came at a time when rigid social structures where in place; there was a sense that those who didnââ¬â¢t fit the ideal where not to be accepted ââ¬â such as homosexuals. The war brought about change, some matters where by no means altered dramatically but it at least brought the old principles into conflict with the new. Whereas other texts show us individuals struggling to accept their personal identities n a society that condemns them, the poem The Soldier by Rupert Brooke presents a character whose position is supported by the masses (through propaganda) and is no doubt as to who they are and what they stand for. His certainty is evident in the opening line of the poem, ââ¬Ëif I should die think only this of meââ¬â¢, this imperative expresses his confidence and as the poem is written in sonnet form his love for his country cannot be denied. However, Brooke never actually saw active service and therefore his genuine understanding of the war is feeble. Stalwartly (2002) writes of Brooke ââ¬Ëhad Brooke lived to experienceâ⬠¦ The trenches of the Western Front, it is hard to imagine that the poetâ⬠¦ Would not have written as realistically as Owenâ⬠¦ . We must thus ask whether his opinion would differ if he had the experiences of his contemporaries and without the weight of public disagreement on his shoulders it is easy to see why Brooke was so self-assured in his poem he is ââ¬Ëa soldier poetâ⬠¦ Not a war poet. ââ¬Ë Contrastingly, in Regeneration an element of Robert Graverââ¬â¢s identity does not agree at all with social views of the time. Homosexuality was actu ally illegal in the United Kingdom from 1533 up until 1967, therefore for Graves the issue goes beyond disapproval. In chapter 17 Graves tells Swanson about Peter ââ¬â a man they both knew of on the front line ââ¬â ââ¬Ëhe was arrestedââ¬â¢ for ââ¬Ësoliciting outside the local barracksââ¬â¢. The shock of this leads Graves to denounce his identity, saying ââ¬Ëitââ¬â¢s only fair to tell you thatâ⬠¦ Since that happened my affections have been running in more normal channelsââ¬â¢. The suspension marks here imply uncertainty and the abstract noun ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ is used almost as a synonym as Graves doesnââ¬â¢t seem able to clearly associate himself with homosexuality. It is clear in this passage that Graves cares greatly about how others perceive him; this consciousness leads to him changing who he is. Although in Birdsong, Weir experiences similar scrutiny due to him still being a virgin it is not seen as wrong but rather a source of amusement and pity for his comrades. Stephen takes it upon himself to ââ¬Ësolveââ¬â¢ Weirââ¬â¢s problem and forces him into a situation which leaves him ââ¬Ëshaken and paleââ¬â¢. Both Weir and Graves feel a certain amount of shame for the uncommon elements of their identity, but a key difference is that Graves allows himself to be changed. Undoubtedly, Weir is conflicted in his feelings towards his virginity, it leads him to be filled with anxiety but yet he also ââ¬Ëconvince[s] himself that what he had missed could not be remarkableââ¬â¢. The verb ââ¬Ëcouldââ¬â¢ suggest doubt and it is unclear whether Weir is ever certain in his conclusions, despite his reluctance to give away something that is linked so intrinsically to his own identity he still feels ââ¬Ëit had come to nothing but humiliationââ¬â¢. In a private letter to his mother Wilfred Owen writes how ââ¬Ë[he] nearly broke down and let [himself] drownââ¬â¢. This sentence alone encapsulates the psychological struggle men underwent in the thin himself and allowed his self-will to slip. In his poem Exposure we see what led to this breakdown. The ABA rhyme scheme highlights the cyclical nature of trench warfare and the anaphoric use of ââ¬Ëbut nothing happensââ¬â¢ further supports this idea, somehow the men always end up back where they started and their ââ¬Ëbrains achedââ¬â¢ from it. It can be argued that being Worried by silenceââ¬â¢ is worse than the The alternative and psychological breakdowns are a result of the repeated tension of waiting. Owen manages to pull himself back up and carry on but for some men it wasnââ¬â¢t as easy. Burns in Regeneration struggles to escape his all consuming psychological trauma. Even Rivers, the doctor who is supposed to be helping him overcome this, is ââ¬Ëdefeatedââ¬â¢ by it. In chapter 15 Rivers goes to visit Burns but he is quick to see that he is struggling to re-establish himself and ââ¬Ëhowever hard Burns tried to thrust the memories of the war behind him, the nightmare followedââ¬â¢. The use of the verb thrustââ¬â¢ here implies force and suggests that Burns is desperately trying to escape but this is a battle he is loosing. Burns illness takes over him mind and body, preventing him from eating and turning him yellow skinnedââ¬â¢. Philip Gibbs, a journalist on the Western Front, later recalled that the shell-shock cases were the worst to see and the worst to cureâ⬠¦ Sturdy, men shaking with ague, mouthing like madman, figures of dreadful terror, speechless and uncontrollableââ¬â¢. Brenna in Birdsong suffers a similar fate. Elizabeth goes to visit him in a care home in order to seek out more information on her grandfather and the war. Brenna kept his sanity through the wars horrors (such as pulling his brothers rotting body out of a shell hole) but once he returned home his mental state declined. What is clear is that Brenna was alone in his battle with his psyche, Elizabeth curses how she cannot ââ¬Ërestore poor Brakemanââ¬â¢s life or take away the pity of the pastââ¬â¢. As seen in Exposure Brakemanââ¬â¢s life is monotonous. He spent his entire post war existence in and out of field hospitals and care homes without a single visitor. Without anything or anyone to cling to Brenna is overpowered by his psychological conflict. We see a conflict in gender roles during the war and thus it is manifested in war literature. Women were evolving in the absence of men and when the men did finally come back they were expected to regress. There is a subversion of gender roles, women must become more hardened and ââ¬Ëmasculineââ¬â¢ to be able to support themselves and their remaining family, while the devastation of the war brings out the more compassionate feminineââ¬â¢ qualities in men. The war broke down boundaries and the conflict lay in the perceptions of what now separates men and women. The women in Regeneration, Legalize in particular, represents a new radical form of women. Legalize relished her freedom so much that doesnââ¬â¢t want her husband ââ¬Ëback on leaveââ¬â¢ or even When itââ¬â¢s overââ¬â¢ and alludes to divorcing him. At the time divorces were still infrequent and frowned upon ââ¬â so through her consideration of it we see how the mind set of women has progressed. Prior seems bewildered by this noting women have ââ¬Ëchanged so much during the warââ¬â¢ and how ââ¬Ëhe was so out of touch with womenââ¬â¢. Siegfried Swanson wrote an ironic sonnet about women entitled The Glory of Women. There is an accusatory tone running throughout the poem, such as the anaphoric use of the first person personal pronoun youââ¬â¢. This use of direct address emphasis Caissonââ¬â¢s frustration with those at home. The opening line of the poem presents the idea that Erosââ¬â¢. In this poem women are seen to love heroics but this is a one sided opinion. Women gave out white feathers at home to those who were not serving to denounce them as cowards, on the surface this seems quite callous and we can see why Swanson puts women on par with the enemy -German motherââ¬â¢. However, the women giving out these feathers no doubt had husbands, brothers and sons fighting on the front line, therefore seeing men safe at home no doubt enraged them. Why should their family fight and die while some stay at home? These conflicting views question whether indeed the greatest conflicts are.. Teen one person and himself, it may be that (Sharon Mennonite 2002) ââ¬Ëgender stereotyping may distort and repress the personal development of individuals of both gendersââ¬â¢. The parallels between Isabella and Elizabeth are evident ââ¬â both have affairs and illegitimate children as a result. However, the circumstances in which these events happen are very different. In pre- war France Isabella is condemned by Renee for her affair, he shouts that she will ââ¬Ë[go] to hellââ¬â¢ for what she has done. The reference to her father ââ¬â ââ¬Ëand youââ¬â¢re fatherâ⬠¦ What can he doâ⬠¦? Gives insight into how women were viewed at the time, as objects or sessions of the men in their lives. However, Elizabethan affair with a married man in the sass is met with little scorn or resistance. This is again indicative of the time, after both wars women had begun to campaign for equality with movements such as the Suffragettes. When Elizabeth tells her friends they are ââ¬Ëdispleasedââ¬â¢ but for superficial reasons such as Jealousy, even her mother who is from an older generation is pleased for her. The similarities between these two women may have been done by Faults to show the changing attitudes towards gender and shows how after the conflicting years progress is eventually made. The conflicting opinions of what was happening on the battlefield created a huge separation between the soldiers and the public. In The Hero by Siegfried Swanson a mother is told of the death of her son. However, she is not told the complete truth, she is told that her son died honorably and ââ¬Ëas heââ¬â¢d have wishedââ¬â¢. The truth is though that her son was ââ¬Ëa useless swineââ¬â¢ (or so the ââ¬Ëbrother officerââ¬â¢ thinks) and he died ââ¬Ëpanicking down [a] trenchââ¬â¢. The annalistic imagery used here creates a stark contrast with phrases such as ââ¬Ëher glorious boy, this further emphasis the difference in what those at home re being told compared with what is actually happening. Both stanza one and three have a matching rhyme scheme (BACK), this could have been done by Swanson to show the two versions of the story, whereas the falter in the rhyme in the second stanza (ABACA) shows the discrepancy of the ââ¬Ëgallant liesââ¬â¢. These lies and propaganda lead to soldiers such as Billy Prior feeling disconnected when they are home on leave. When walking along the beach with Sarah, Prior describes the public as ââ¬Ëblack figures, like insectsââ¬â¢ this metaphor extends as Prior describes their movements saying they[swarm] across the beach like insectsââ¬â¢. The connotations of the negative imagery of insects, especially flies, are foulness and decay. This separation showed how the war took lives in every sense of the word as some soldiers couldnââ¬â¢t find a place in society after the war, Prior feels ââ¬Ëlike a ghostââ¬â¢ among them. Weir experiences a similar feeling of disconnection when home on leave, he goes to visit his parents and feels strangely formal. It appears to him that the England he thought he was fighting for ceases to mean anything to him on a Weir to wonder ââ¬Ëif he was going to say any word of greeting. Throughout his stay he is Waiting for the moment when the familiar wash of normality would come over himââ¬â¢ but normality seems lost to him in the way he knew it. This indifference quickly rises into anger for Weir, after his leave he calls those at home fat pigsââ¬â¢ who ââ¬Ëhave got no idea what lives are led for themââ¬â¢. He then goes on to wish ââ¬Ëa great bombardment would smash downâ⬠¦ And kill the whole lot of themâ⬠¦ Particularly my family. ââ¬Ë. Like in The Hero the annalistic imagery emphasis the disdain Weir has for those at home and this anger fuels the conflict between the battlefield and the home front. COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES Complementary therapies are those that are used along with conventional medicine, to help relieve symptoms, lessen side effects, or provide psychological benet [1].There is an ever-increasing use of such complementary treatments with about half of all adult cancer patients using some form of complementary therapy, and an increasing number of parents of children with cancer supporting its use [2]. These non-harmful therapies include interventions such as biofeedback, relaxation and meditation, hypnosis, imaging, massage, aromatherapy, a variety of culturally dependent and culturally sensitive spiritual healing therapies, and in-depth religious beliefs and practices. Such non-harmful complementary therapies (a) often make the child/adolescent patients and their parents feel better, (b) give them a sense of having a wider control over the decision-making process regarding the child?s health, (c) can help reduce psychological as well as physical pain, (d) can improve the quality of life, (e)might offer some relief from the side effects of conventional therapies, and (f) can boost the immune system. Both hard and soft data frompediatric cancer clinics verify the value, usefulness, and extensive participation by families in such complementary therapies [2]. Those that are not harmful and provide psychological support for the children and their families should not be discouraged by the medical health care team. In summary, physicians and the other members of the health care team should discourage discontinuation of proven conventional therapies and the substitution of unproven alternative therapies. At the same time, physicians should not discourage parental discussion of and controlled use of non-harmful complementary therapies, with the following caveat.

Research paper - Essay Example However, as with most aspects of the advanced economy, there are a number positive factors that the existence and proliferation of money provide as well as a certain number of drawbacks and disadvantages that the current system provides as well. As a function of analyzing these advantages and disadvantages, it is the hope of this author that the reader will be able to integrate a more full and complete as well as nuanced understanding of the current issues surrounding the monetary basis that society relies upon. The first disadvantage to money is the fact that it is one of the most definitive means by which individuals are judged based upon their overall worth as a human being. Due to the way in which the economy has developed and money has been placed as something of the supreme god to which all people worship, the level to which a person is able to accrue wealth has become of more importance than character, morality, or other primal determinants of human integrity (Webster, 2010). This is not necessarily the fault of money; rather it is the fault of the way in which human culture always seeks to find a way to separate one group from another and ascribe value to each and every situation that might be represented within society. With regards to the advantages of money, one can of course point to the fact that it allows a convenient and equitable means of exchange in order for individuals to purchase key resources and provide for themselves and for their families. Moreover, as compared to the prior barter economy that existed in past history, money provides something of a solid and relatively stable means of exchange that oftentimes carries an implicit value and is not dependent upon a good harvest or other key factors to determine its value. By simplifying the method of exchange, money is able to provide a degree and/or level of certainty whereas prior

Philosophy Final Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Philosophy Final - Essay Example This is applicable because analytic sentences of normal language show a substantial diversity of form and complexity that makes their use in interpretation unreasonable. Although logic is favorable in real time interpretation of concepts, other philosophical applications are also essential in making inferential arguments. Inductive and Deductive Reasoning This reasoning entails evaluation of suggestions resulting from some examples. In this manner, interpretations are made from general ideas to individual instances that suggest truths (Hausman, Kahane and Tidman 5). This concept involves reasoning from detailed observations and processes, which start from discovering patterns and consistencies, articulating some tentative suggestions that are discovered and then formulating a general inferences or theories. The synthesis of ideas from general opinions of specific makes this logic to be called ââ¬Å"bottom upâ⬠logic (Burgess 8). For instance, if A is true and B is true, the C i s probable. These logics also employ restrictive probability meanings to signify procedures of the degree to which suggestion statements support theories. Inductive reasoning is probable to fail and produce misconceptions, such as a speedy conclusion mistake. Despite the mistakes made in inductive and considering the level of the limitations, most perception is inductive. For instance, inductive reasoning is applied in cell theory, which is among the basics of current biology uses the concepts of inductive reasoning. This is because all creatures observed are made up of cells. The argument is either true or false because biologists consider that all existing things are made up of cells (Minto 17). On the other hand, deductive reasoning operates to provide the truth of the inference offered that the statementââ¬â¢s evidences are accurate. This explains that, in a deductive argument, the evidences are planned to provide such close support for the deduction that, if the suggestions are true, then it would be inconceivable for the deduction to be untrue. Such an argument where the evidence accurately supports the conclusion is a ââ¬Å"deductivelyâ⬠valid argument. For instance, if A is correct, and B is correct, then C must be true. This means that if a valid claim has true deductions, then the argument is comprehensive and valid. This is approach explains the use of the term "top-down" approach. It entails narrowing down on a topic of interest into comprehensive and specific theories that can be explained (Hausman, Kahane and Tidman 7). However, the variance between the inductive and deductive arguments originates from the connection the author of the claims takes to be between the evidences and the deduction. This implies that if the author of the claim believes that the accuracy of the evidences establishes the truth of the inference due to description, reasonable structure or scientific requirement, then the argument is logical (Burgess 10). On the ot her hand, if the author of the claim does not consider that the accuracy of the evidences establishes the truth of the assumption, but considers that their truth offers good cause to believe the inference true, then the claim is inductive. The two bases of argument help philosophers and authors to make convincing conclusions about their theories or claims. This makes arguments valid and reasonable by the connections derived from claims and conclusions (Burgess 10). Conversely, deductive reason

Capital Punishment Should Remain Legal Essay -- Pro-Death Penalty Essa
I am going to argue that capital punishment is a morally and logically justifiable punishment for criminals. I will demonstrate this by showing how the logic behind not having the death penalty is invalid. I will also present examples that will defend my argument. I will then present counterarguments and their implications. The death penalty in the United States is a contested subject, and even recently it has been voted to be unconstitutional by some states. Currently there are many states that still have the death penalty, though many have not executed anyone in recent years. Outside of the United States the issue is also split, with many countries recently eliminating the death penalty. Crimes that usually receive the death penalty as punishment usually involve being directly involved with the death of another person. Though the majority of the United States still is in favor of capital punishment, there exists a large and growing minority that believes that the death penalty is an immoral punishment to use against another human being. The opposition to capital punishment often uses the logic that even though this person has committed a horrible crime that they still deserve the right to life, that it is something that does not have a right to be taken away. This argument is flawed based on the fact that lives are often saved because of the death penalty on a larger scale. Though there is the loss of the criminalââ¬â¢s life when he is executed, if he were to receive a normal punishment and go to prison, he may eventually be able to get out and commit more crimes again. Capital punishment is usually only sentenced when the prosecution feels that the crime is so unjust that there is no other recourse but the death ... ...an effective deterrent to crime as it is meant to be. Some opponents of capital punishment point to the fact that capital punishment is rarely used in comparison to the amount of actual murder convictions. The logic behind this claim seems to be at fault. This is especially noticed when considering that many of the opponents of capital punishment believe life to be the most important thing that one can have, that it is a basic right bestowed to everyone. Logically, wouldnââ¬â¢t threatening to remove the most important thing in somebodyââ¬â¢s life serve as deterrence to committing such a crime? This counterargument is shown to be invalid on this basis. After considering counterarguments and presenting my arguments against them I feel I have presented sufficient information to support my claim that capital punishment is a logical and moral practice when used reasonably.

From Regional Star to Global Leader Essay
Yang Jianguo was recently promoted from country manager for China to global head of product development at a French perfume maker named Deronde. He had been country manager for the China operations, having been promoted from his job running a lab that had produced two hit scents in the Asian market. The companyââ¬â¢s CEO, Alain Deronde had chosen Jianguo over three other rising stars. Yves Saurac, one of the three rising stars, was the vice president of the company who everyone had assumed to get job instead of Jianguo. Yves was also close friend with the CEOââ¬â¢s family but Jianguo succeeded in the competition. Jianguo was eager to succeed in his new role in Paris. There were several issues to deal with in the first place. The companyââ¬â¢s best prospects were in emerging markets, yet consumers in China and many other Asian markets found the Western scents unpleasantly strong. Sales were weak in Latin America as well. Given that after decades of double digit growth, Derondeââ¬â¢s market share was also sliding. Jianguo had no doubt that he had some winning ideas, but they seem to be falling on deaf ears. During the Jaingguoââ¬â¢s pitch at the board meeting, everyone at the meeting felt unease about Jiangguoââ¬â¢s idea pitch. Members of the executive team, for their part, find Jianguo to be largely indifferent to their input. Those other board members, including the three rising stars kept opposing to Jianguoââ¬â¢s ida pitch. He was getting nowhere. Jianguoââ¬â¢s first pitch to board members turned out to be very disappointing. Those three are competitor, but they had known each other for years and as a result, they also shared degree of trust. When, three of them had a moment to connect privately, Yves expressed his earnest concern about companyââ¬â¢s future and how Jianguo avoid talking to him about the issue of connecting Eastern and Wes tern culture. Problems at hand indentified ââ¬â what needs to be changed As the world embraces the global economy, modern corporations might need to promote diversified management staffs in order to keep pace in the emerging market economy. Thrusting onto the world stage, Jianguo Yang became a newà generation regional managers in French perfume company. Even he equipped with intimate knowledge of local market and local Chinese management skill but differences in national and corporate cultures within the same organization can pose significant hurdles in a new environment. Different attitudes and behaviors of new colleagues might make him a hard time to work and get familiar with. The persuasive argument and strong communication might help someway but the most importance is to understand the diversified peersââ¬â¢ culture and adapt to it. Making the transition to the global arena can be challenging so can Jianguo make the transition? And what should Jianguo do? Analysis of causes From regional star to global leader, from a Chinese local manager to a multi-national executive, a lot of things have changed for Jianguo. It seems, on the surface, it is a good thing. But this transition period is actually very tough to handle. It is very easily to change into a bad thing. Jianguo is facing a turning point. The teammates wouldnââ¬â¢t like to cooperate with him. His superior has some misunderstanding towards him. He was uninvolved in strategic thinking, feeling frustrated and confused. In fact, his problem is resulted from three aspects. First aspect is the cultural difference. Jianguo came from China. In Chinese companies, the main organization structure is hierarchy. What does it mean? It means that employees report to his direct head. Department employee reports to department manager. Department manager reports to general manager. Leapfrog report is definitely taboo. The logic is supposed to be like this. However, in French companies, they mainly worship flat organizational structure. It is totally a different picture. The term ââ¬Å"Leapfrog reportâ⬠never exists under this circumstance. The General Manager welcomes every single employee to report direct to him. For Jianguo, as a Chinese, he doesnââ¬â¢t know that. So when he found his French employees leapfrog reported to his head instead of him. The conflict turns up. He didnââ¬â¢t feel well. He held bias and misunderstanding towards his employees. Besides, in Chinese culture, the employees get used to move under the teamà headââ¬â¢s order, which is identified as top-down organization style. Jianguo gets used of this mode. He never listened to his subordinates suggestions. Instead, he intended to give orders. In French, the organizational style is bottom-up. You listen and you make decisions. Secondly, it goes to role difference. Jianguo was once a Chinese local manager. Now he is a global companyââ¬â¢s executive. The role has changed, with a lot of things following. In the past, his decision making was mainly on intuition, experience and anecdotes. Now, his decision should be based on strategic thinking and data, which means more scientific and logic. In the past, his leadership type was transactional, which means he was a task driven manager. Now he should become transformational, which means he has to inspire his team members, to listen to them and to communicate to them. Also the focus and the political wisdom are different now. I got a table to illustrate as follows. Thirdly, it has to go to the ineffective communication. Jianguo might be a smart guy based on his outstanding achievement in the former position, and obviously he has a lot of good ideas for marketing in the new position. Butà he did really a bad job to promote himself and his ideas. His colleagues didnââ¬â¢t buy it. He never initiates a deep talk with his subordinates. He doesnââ¬â¢t know what kind of people he is working with. He never listens to them patiently, given that he seems too eager to prove his capabilities. He shows no respect to his teammates. What was worse, he never penetrates his ideas to his superior. He didnââ¬â¢t know what kind of character his superior was and what kind of marketing direction he was in favor of. During their meeting, Jianguo failed to notice the fact that the superior felt unease to his idea. Jianguo just focused on his own idea and himself. This ineffective communication may ruin his career. Evaluation of the actions in the case Jianguo was not dynamics enough to acclimate himself to new working role and multicultural environment. Working culture and environment in French company would be definitely different and beyond what he had anticipated. Being only one promoted he probably could not rely to the colleagues who feel betrayed as much as he would do in the previous role. Jianguo had many options to deliver some quick wins and demonstrate his value so the colleagues could make themselves look bad by becoming his enemies. So now the leadership and communication skill would play important role if he would like to keep pace in his career development further. To succeed, Jianguo had to make some changes in his beliefs and behavior. Approaches to solve the problem The problems encountered in this case can be viewed from two aspects: the aspect of Jianguo Yang and the aspect of the organization. Jiangguo Yang should make some changes to fit the organization; meanwhile the organization should also make some change for further development. In this case, three experts give their commentary advices, which mainly on the aspect of Jianguo Yang. However, in our approaches to solve the problem, the aspect of the organization will be the main part. There are two reasons for this. First, fairly speaking, for Jianguo Yang, the experts have already given some very good advices, which we donââ¬â¢t want to challenge on. Besides the truth that the advices are really practical and effective, at least we think so, these experts are very experienced and insightful. They are Katherine Tsang, theà executive vice chairman and CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in Shanghai, Mansour Javidan, the dean of research and the Garvin Distinguished Professor at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona, and James Champy, the chairman of consulting for Perot Systems and a coauthor of Reengineering the Corporation (Harper, 1993). Mansour Javidan is also the president and chairman of the board of the GLOBE research project. He has lived or worked in 22 countries. Second, we think characteristics of an organization, such as organization structure, organizational culture and organizational change, are no less important than the humane issues in a company. This is also an very important topic in Organizational Behavior. Before we moved on, we should notice that they did notice the side of the organization. Although the three experts are all focusing on the side of Jianguo, one expert, James Champy, mentioned some about the organization. He said that ââ¬Å"Deronde International needs to adjust as well. If the company is serious about making a global move, Alain should take his whole team through some sort of cultural appreciation and immersion process. Culture begins at the top, and in this company the executives seem comfortable stereotyping anybody who doesnââ¬â¢t look and speak the way they do. Itââ¬â¢s no surprise that Alainââ¬â¢s direct reports arenââ¬â¢t comfortable with Jianguo. Iââ¬â¢m not entirely optimistic about Derondeââ¬â¢s chances for transformation, however. Company cultures and behaviors donââ¬â¢t budge easily ââ¬â especially if the CEO has more of an appetite for foie gras than for change.â⬠However, this comment is not very practical and detailed. Now, letââ¬â¢s talk about why the organization needs to change and how. The value of Jianguo is not fully used in the company. Reasons are already talked in the former part. However, we need to see his values and that is the reason for the company to make some change to fully use the potential of its employees. Jianguoââ¬â¢s value can also be proved in James Champyââ¬â¢s comment. ââ¬ËIn my experience, in a family-run business, loyalty and comfort trump other considerations. Look at Ford Motor: Young Bill Ford was not ready to run that business. The company has continued to lose market share, but the family seems to be comfortable with a trusted person at the helm. So I was surprised that Alain had chosen Jianguo. It would have been so much easier to choose Yves, whom he knows and trusts. Yet Alain seems to have made a clever strategic choice. Presumably, he sees that in a recession, Derondeââ¬â¢s prospects for growth lie primarily in emergingà markets. Jianguo appears to be connected to the young Chinese consumer, and Alain evidently has the smarts to connect the dots.ââ¬â¢ Having known all the facts above, what changes should the company make? The bureaucracy form both sides, Chinese and French, should be reduced. Although the bureaucracy has some strength, such as functional economies of scale, minimum duplication of personnel and equipment, enhanced communication and centralized decision making, in this case the inefficiency of communication is large due to the bureaucracy in the minds of people from both sides. The weaknesses of bureaucracy are subunit conflicts with organizational goals, obsessive concern with rules and regulations and lack of employee discretion to deal with problems. Here is an example for this. ââ¬Å"Jianguo began with a quick review of the ideas he had pitched at lunch the day before and then launched into his proposal for a line of skin care products aimed at young men. He thought he had the perfect spokesman: Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang. ââ¬Å"Will people know who he is?â⬠Yves asked. ââ¬Å"Outside China, I mean?â⬠He looked around the room. ââ¬Å"Yes, China matters, but letââ¬â¢s not forget that most of our customers arenââ¬â¢t in third world countries.â⬠Jianguo moved on without comment. ââ¬Å"Before we can even start talking about new products for these markets,â⬠How can we change the organization? We want to use the Lewinââ¬â¢s Three-Step Change Model. The three steps are unfreezing, movement and refreezing. There are two forces, driving forces and restraining forces. Driving forces are forces that direct behavior away from the status quo. Restraining forces are forces that hinder movement from the exiting equilibrium. Unfreezing is to change efforts to overcome the pressures of both individual resistance and group conformity. Refreezing is stabilizing a change intervention by balancing driving and restraining forces. What we learned from this case From what we discussed above about this incident in the case, we learn quite a lot about how to face an issue like that, how to analyze it in terms of organizational behavior theories. On one hand, we can see that the organizational behavior issues commonly exist in the organizations and this kind of issues are not only important for healthy development of the organizations but also complicated and very sensitive. On the other hand, to avoid this kind of thing happen, to solve this kind of things, both theà organization and the person mainly concerned should make efforts. For avoiding, the organization or the superior should take more responsibilities. The whole organization should cultivate a more flexible mechanism of decision making under the situation of such a big but necessary high-level personnel change for companyââ¬â¢s strategic movement. As a superior, it must consider carefully and completely about the problems probably confronted with before making such a decision. First, Pay attention to cultural difference. In this case, due to the existing cultural difference, he should create some chance for Jianguo, to let him own the working experience in different cultural, like working in the overseas branch or in the department with different cultural atmosphere. Second, do enough preparation for promotion. Appointing the person to assist the superior whose position he will be promoted to or make his job rotated in different departments or branches should be a good preparation for promoting him. Third, cultivating a teamwork spirit is important to become a good leader. For solving the problems, the person mainly concerned, like Jianguo in the case, should take more responsibilities. First, he should analyze the cultural difference, the role difference and make an effective and efficient interaction with his colleagues. In other words, he should change himself according to this new environment, and make achievements which can help him get higher trusted by his opposites. In mutual trusted circumstance, he can promote his idea more easily. Second, he must started to learn more about the market, and convince others with scientific research, like doing field survey, get learned more accurate figures, which can improve his ideas and make his arguments more supportive and persuasive. Last but not least, he should find a breach to reverse negative trend, and this breach is Alain, who promoted him to such a position. Alain can consider this whole issue on a higher position and in an all-round manner. The consensus between such two main persons involved definitely would help the whole issue move towards the better direction. In conclusion, this kind of issue is caused by three problems, including cultural difference, role difference, and ineffective communication. So, to deal with this issue need to minimize cultural difference, minimize role difference, and improve communication. The solutions we mentioned above along with the suggestions given by three experiences persons in the case, should make good sense, and solve theà problem the company faced in the case. In current situation, the most key person for dealing with this problem is still Jianguo. Only if he deals with this issue in the ways we suggested above, be patient, and get co-operated by Alain, it is believable that he can change the current situation and realize the original strategic intension they expected successfully.

Analysis Of Desiree s Baby By Kate Chopin - 1446 Words
Analysis of Desireeââ¬â¢s Baby In the story Desiree s Baby by Kate Chopin the plot mainly revolves around race issues and also includes elements of sexism. In terms of race the difference between being white and being black shows vital importance in the characters lives through the story. As Desiree and Armand both originally associate themselves with the white class, once the plot unveils their black heritage they are faced with uncertainty, and ultimately their lives become meaningless and not worth living. This meaninglessness is shown through the symbolism Chopin uses of white objects being portrayed positively and black objects being discussed negatively. Gender roles are explored throughout the story as Desiree faces the struggles of establishing herself to the fullest potential. The plot of Chopin s Desiree s Baby centers around the complex themes of race and gender. Racism is a prevalent topic throughout Desiree s Baby, as the color of a person s skin is the main fac tor that determines the value of his life. In the story when Desiree comes to the conclusion that she is black and the baby s blackness comes from her she exclaims, You must know it is not true. I shall die. I must die. I cannot be so unhappy and live (Chopin 244). As Desiree must face the fact that everyone is telling her she is black, she begins to attempt to deny what is becoming obvious. Incarceration And High Disproportionality Of Aboriginal...
By incarcerating offenders the state based justice system ignores offenders needs and histories (Elliott, 2011, p. 72). The state assumes offenders are rational. This rationality is tied to the system looking at the individual level or the ââ¬Å"bad applesâ⬠of responsibility (Zimbardo, 2008; Elliot, 2011, p. 72). However, a rational decision maker is unable to always predict potential alternatives and consequences (Zsolnai, 1997). Therefore, the individual level of responsibly ignores other systematic factors that influence offending. It is arguable that the Western system examines beyond the individual level by incorporating specific sentencing principles for Aboriginal people (see R v Gladue, 1999). However, society still has massâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is likely to curb the successful development of informal controls which is seen as a better deterrent than formal systems of control, like incarceration (MacKenzie De Li, 2002, p. 244). Community justice benefits over the state based justice system with respect to punishment. Specifically, community justice focuses on the restoration and rehabilitation (Taylor Auerhahn, 2015, p. 303), rather than incarceration. Transgressions are given to the victims, offenders and community to resolve rather than letting the state impose arbitrary sanctions. Community justice allows for more direct solutions to solve crime through the collective agreement between all stakeholders (Wenzel et al., 2008, p. 376). This allows for restorative treatment which has higher levels of satisfaction than traditional forms of incarceration (Wenzel et al., 2008, p. 377). The second limitation of the state based justice is system is that victims are ignored and excluded from the formal criminal justice process (Daigle, 2012, p. 2). Under the state system the power is taken away from victims and placed into the hands of the state to ensure control over the criminal proceedings (Elliott, 2011, p. 65). Gromet and Darley (20 06) argue that crime victims experience marginalization and frustration due to their exclusion in criminal proceedings (p. 396). They lack voice and an ability to

Why the Korean War Broke Out Free Essays
Why did the Korean War break out? Reasons as to why war broke out in Korea can be debated due to the fact that a number of factors contributed towards the war. The viewpoint of North Korea starting the war can be seen as Kim ill sung had the intention of reuniting Korea under communism, however there was hostility within South Korea as Syngman Rhee also aimed to reunite Korea under his nationalist views. The two superpowers of the time can be seen as responsible for the outbreak of war because the Korean War can be viewed as a product of the cold war as the USSR backed the north and the USA helped fight with the south. We will write a custom essay sample on Why the Korean War Broke Out or any similar topic only for you Order Now The view of war breaking out as a result internal conflict within Korea can be seen due to both Kimââ¬â¢s and Rheeââ¬â¢s intent on reuniting Korea under their leadership. North Koreaââ¬â¢s aggression towards starting the war is due to the fact that Kim aimed on bringing communism to the south and unite the whole of Korea; Kimââ¬â¢s intent on starting war can be seen in the fact that he had multiple visits to Stalin in order to receive both permission and support for invading the south. Kim was able to persuade Stalin to let him invade by stating there would be no US intervention and that he would have control over the South within a few weeks. North Koreaââ¬â¢s actions can also be seen as to why war broke out because they did pass the 38th parallel and invade the south, therefore acting as the aggressor as they had had military equipment supplied by the USSR with an army 135,000 men who believed in what they were fighting for as supposed to South Koreaââ¬â¢s unprepared smaller army made up of conscripted men. Regardless of the fact that the north was first to invade the south, blame can still be put on Rhee for the outbreak of war. This is due to the fact that South Korea did launch small scale attacks on the north prior to the invasion and this can be seen as a form of instigation for war. The outbreak of war can also be seen as the result of internal Korean conflict as Rhee had the same intentions as Kim to reunite Korea by invading past the 38th parallel, only Kim was able to do it first as he had soviet support making him the dominate power whereas Rhee had no US support at the start of the Northââ¬â¢s invasion. The war between North and south Korea was regarded as a civil war by the British yet when we look closer into why the war broke out we can see that the superpowers were behind it and that the Korean civil war can be seen as a product of the cold war occurring between the USA and USSR at the time. The USSR can be seen to have responsibility for the outbreak of war as it can be argued that Kim would have not invaded the south without Stalinââ¬â¢s support and permission because without Stalinââ¬â¢s military support Kim would not have been powerful enough to achieve his goal of gaining total control of Korea within a few weeks after his invasion. The USSR can also accept responsibility for the war because of fact that Stalin aimed to spread his communist sphere of influence across the world. Stalin had initially rejected Kimââ¬â¢s request of invading the south but in 1950 he granted Kim support and permission to invade, this was most likely due to the fact that communism was established in china at the time giving him incentive to spread his communist support throughout Asia and also he had successfully detonated the atom bomb giving him more reason to believe that the US would not repeat their use of the atom bomb on Stalin out of fear of retaliation. Chinaââ¬â¢s contribution towards the outbreak war is slim as their only initial contribution to the start of the war was to allow for soviet supplies to pass through china and reach the North Koreans. The involvement of the USA can be seen as the reason why the conflict within Korea transformed from a civil war into a fully recognised war. US aims during the cold war was to contain the spread of communism so that the ââ¬Å"domino theoryâ⬠would not occur therefore when they were alerted that the North Koreans invaded the south they went to the United Nations in order to get involved in the war. Other reasons for US involvement include the fact that elections were coming up and Truman believed that taking action in Korea would boost his support. Although the US originally intended to help prevent the north spreading communism to the south McArthur found that he was having great success in fighting the north Korans within South Korea gave him reason to pass the 38th parallel and attempt to take completely remove communism from Korea. The US doing this created outbreak of war in Korea as china decided to get involved out of fear of the US approaching the Yalu River, therefore Turing a civil war into the Korean War Overall the outbreak of war can be blamed all factors that contributed the war. The war breakout can be seen as the result of aggression with Korea with both Kim and Rhee launching small scale attack on each other and sharing the intent of uniting Korea however the superpowers are responsible for the actual outbreak of the Koran war. This is because both sides of Korea would not have been strong enough to start a war without the influence of the superpowers. The USSR gave permission and supplies to Kim allowing him to invade the south and America got involved in Korea creating a war as it caused a form of retaliation from the south that would have lost against a soviet fueled invasion from the north. Therefore the Korean War was a product of the cold war between America and the USSR. How to cite Why the Korean War Broke Out, Essay examples

Governance and Management Health â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Governance and Management Health. Answer: Introduction Governance and Managementboth are terms that are widely used in business organizations. Most of the people co relates them which is wrong. They are similar in fewer fields but Governance andManagement both hold their own importances in their own manner. Governance is defined as Forming of policies and nonstop observations of their accurate execution by the employees of the central body of an organization, it includes the system of harmonizing the powers of the members and their primary duty of increasing the success and validity of the organization (King, 2013). Whereas Management is defined by many renowned authors and one of the definition given by them is provided here as: Management is an art of knowing what is to be done , when it is to be done , how it is to be done and by whom it is to be done (Taylor, 2011). F.W Taylor was considered as the father of the scientific management. Here we will study the concepts of governance and management in detail. Governance is any rule, policy or standard that is set by the upper level or the higher authorities of an organization to reach to the organization goals. Whereas Management is concerned with every little activity of the organization, what an employee is doing, how to take correct measures if anything has gone out of control. Governance is doing right things whereas Management is doing things right(GRP, 2014). Governance and management both are similar as they both work in achieving the goals of the organization. Governance is related to the structure of an organization where as management is related to the day to day operations of the organization(Rana, 2011). Governance and Management works together in order to ensure proper governance, a well maintained management is required that can ensure proper working of the staff. For each and every big to small organizational activity the higher authorities have made ru les and regulations that defines the degree between the governance and management in that particular activity (Gupta, 2007). Both the terms management and governance holds importance in their own manner, however we could say governance holds a bit more importance as it is the area that directs the management towards the achieving of the goals. It is true that governance comes first and later comes the management but we cant ignore the fact that if there is an absence of an effective management then competent governance is of waste only. Competent Governance is a requirement of every organization where as an effective management is a need of every organization. Effective governance will make such rules, standards, and objectives, policies that now or later will prove beneficial for the organization. With the help of effective management those rules, standards, objectives, policies will be maintained and achieved. Hence both the Governance and the Management holds importance in their own respective dimensions. Governance Clinical governance is a systematic approach in which the firm is responsible for constant improving the worth of their services and safeguarding high standards(Nayyer, 2011) Under the collaborative governance performs jointly with the management and creates such a proactive environment that management works without any interference from the high end authority and they take an active part in all the high end matters. Management Project Management is a defined system of implementing, preparing, handling and initiating the job of the group to attain specific goals (Taylor, 2011) Under risk management the managers evaluates, predicts, forecasts future uncertainties in order to be ready for them , so that business could survive it easily The principles of management were given by the (Fayol, 2012) whereas principles of governance were given by (King, 2013) Management Henry Fayol emphasized on unity of the workers as the first principle of the management, if there is no unity amongst the workers then no management can achieve its objectives. Unity of direction is another principle of management; the entire company must be working in order to achieve a common objective. Henry Fayol mentioned that authority and responsibility are related to each other, one cant work in the absence of the other. So both authority responsibility must be given together to an employee. Governance An effective leadership is the first and foremost principle of the governance, the company must be leaded by a competent leader who can take risky as well as right decisions for the firm. The high end governing body should be accountable to the whole organization for their decisions. The high end governing body must set rules and regulations and examples of no malpractices , and should not be involved in any kind of frauds GOVERNANCE Governance is the related with the decision making or setting up rules or policies or framing standards for the organization that each every employee needs to follow. MANAGEMENT On the other hand management is related to all the administrative work of the organization, managers make sure that all the rules and regulation made by the governing body are being followed properly. Governance consists of a governing body, or people interested in the affairs of the organization (shareholders). They are a high end power that comes prior to everything. Whereas management consists of middle or subordinate level of employees that comes on second after governance. They need to follow all the orders of governance. As said above governance makes policies, rules and regulations for the organization as whole. These policies, rules are made to take the organization to its objectives. On the other hand management is only concerned with implementing those rules and polices and to make sure that these sets of rules and policies are doing well in order to achieve objectives Governance can be said as more important than management , as it is done by the governing body and all the core decisions are finalized by them Management may not be as important as governance but in absence of an effective management , government alone cannot do anything Governance is only concerned with achieving of objectives , the high end authority may set up the objectives only But it is the management that allocates appropriate sources to required areas in order to achieve those objectives. Conclusion By gathering and observing all the given facts and statements a brief conclusion is written over here , Governance and Management are somehow co-related to each other and they cannot perform well in the absence of one another. Governance do hold an up hand but that doesnt means management is of low importance. Hence both governance and management are important for a sound organization. Bibliography Blog, M. (2010). Do Working Mothers Benefit Families
Introduction Nowadays, married women are not relegated to the role of housewives; many pursue a career. ââ¬Å"In 2008, 64% of women with children aged three to 17 years were in the labor force, and 39.6% were employed; In 2009, 70.3% of women with children aged three to 17 years worked, 43.1% of them were employed, most of them full time; In 2010, Among mothers with children aged three to 17 years, 77.1% were employed, two-thirds of them full time.â⬠(Doak, par.1) The break-down of rigid gender roles and the increased participation of women in the workplace have given women more choices in how to improve their own lives and that of their families.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Do Working Mothers Benefit Families? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Nevertheless, working mothers are often subject to negative feedback, such as the claim that working mothers are being selfish or even harming their fami lies! There are divergent viewpoints of working mothers, which leads to the question: ââ¬Å"Do working mothers benefit families?â⬠The reason why I am interested this issue is because I am a new mother with plans to pursue a career after I complete my studies. Even though I am struggling on the decision of whether go to work or be a full-time mother, I know clearly that I have to face the reality of losing out on income if I choose to stay at home to take of my daughter. I believe this kind of reality is very common for majority families. Through many articles and media resources which I collected for this research question, I arrived at a conclusion that is working mothers and happy families are not contradictory but coexist. Working mothers should not be criticized for deciding to pursue a career, especially, as long as they are able to balance between it and their responsibility towards their families and children. The reality is that working mothers are now a mainstay for their families, or say working mothers are benefit families. Working Mothers Benefit Families First of all, mothers are employed because their families depend on them financially. ââ¬Å"Numerous studies have demonstrated that simply doing two full-time jobs (parenting and waged work) is extraordinarily difficult for any individual and results in considerable stress and can result in degraded parenting and degraded relationships,â⬠(par. 2) explains Professor de Vaus of La Trobe University, Australia. This quote demonstrates that the traditional family model of the stay-at-home wife is not tenable anymore. Increased cost of living necessitates two-income earners. Author Stevenson states, ââ¬Å"Most fathers felt that the motherââ¬â¢s work was beneficial and facilitated family life. They talked about it enhancing the quality of their relationship together, and recognized the way in which work enabled their partner to develop and express different aspects of her identity. They also appreciated having help in supplementing the financial costs of raising a family.â⬠(par. 8)Advertising Looking for research paper on gender studies? Let's see if we can help you! There is no doubt that many mothers want to stay at home with their children. However, the economic evidence is clear. Mothers have been entering the labor force in larger and larger numbers because they need to for the good of their families. Another way working mothers benefit families is by being better life partners and strengthening their marriages. A recent study showed that ââ¬Å"wivesââ¬â¢ full-time employment is now associated with increased marital stabilityâ⬠(Coontz, par.14). Also, having an educated female spouse may decrease the rate of divorce: ââ¬Å"College graduates are more likely to have egalitarian ideas about sharing housework and breadwinning, and recent (as of 2007) research shows that egalitarian ideas and behaviors improve marital satisfaction for both men and women.â⬠(Coontz, par.13) Many studies show that men now want a wife who is at a similar educational or occupational level: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ as the wife worked more, the husbandââ¬â¢s view of the quality of his marriage actually improvedâ⬠(Coontz, par17.). According to Professor de Vaus in the Journal of Family Studies, They see the arrangement as fair, not because each partner is contributing in the same way, but because they both need the contribution of the other. The mutual interdependence rather than sameness is what enables these wives to regard the arrangements as equitableâ⬠(de Vaus, par.8). A family works better as a whole unit when both spouses are working to support the family as a common goal. Moreover, in the online video clip of ââ¬Å"Working Moth ers @ Ciscoâ⬠, Aileen who has two kids said that ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t imagine myself with a partner who chose to stay at home and who didnââ¬â¢t have a life outside our family. For starters, what would we talk about? â⬠¦ [Itââ¬â¢s] good for the family because we can sit down together and plan financially for the future because we have two incomes to work withâ⬠(Cscopr). Both anecdotal evidence and research indicate that having a working mother increases the level of marital stability. Lastly, working mothers provide children with positive role model. Working mothers understand that the sacrifices implicit working outside of the home, while at times, feeling that sometimes their employment could have a negative impact: ââ¬Å"They could also feel that their children sometimes resented them working if it cut into times when the children wanted to be with their mother.â⬠(Luscombe, par.4)Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Do W orking Mothers Benefit Families? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More On the other hand, mothers also understand that working outside does have benefits for their children as well. According to Amelia Hill, a social affairs correspondent for the Guardian, ââ¬Å"The majority of mothers feel no guilt about leaving their children to go out to work and believe their working life has improved since having children.â⬠(par.6) In fact, children whose mothers work feel proud of them. In the article ââ¬Å"Career Mum Balancing Act,â⬠the author Baker-Dowdell points out ââ¬Å"[My daughter] said, ââ¬ËMummy, I want to be like you when I grow up, I want to go to workââ¬â¢. I was really touched and I could see that my going to work is a positive influence on her.â⬠(par.5). Baker-Dowdell also talks about how the motherââ¬â¢s work benefited their children. They felt that it enhanced the quality of mother-child relationships, he lped their children to develop useful skills, and provided them with a positive role model: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve learnt negotiation skills and I have taught my children negotiation skills and they use it effectively.â⬠(par.7) In the online video ââ¬Å"The Effect of Working Moms on Their Kids,â⬠Dr. Sylvia Gearing points out that the working mothers give their children a great sense of independence, good role models, and the solid reality that women work in society. Best of all, they show their children that mommy has a strong sense of self-esteem. Working Mothers Do Not Benefit Families Gender equality has been the debate of many scholars and organizations and as a result, the idea has been embraced by the society. However, it is clear that not many people have strategized on how to deal with situation and the challenges that comes with it. Research has shown that getting involved in both parenting and paid work as full time jobs is not easy for any individual. As a matter of fact, in some cases it has been seen not be a solution to the needs in the family but as a source of another problem. That is, it has been recorded to cause stress as well as influencing negative relationships and parenting process. It is important to note the way mothers cope with this situation is influenced by many factors. For example, the nature of the job and the structure of the family are some of the factors that influence the relationship of working mothers and their children. The structure of the family may contribute largely in that, in case the family is extended and the mother is expected to take care of the elderly, it would mean more responsibilities for the mothers. In addition, the number of children and their age may make the situation more complex. Many and young children may make the mother/ woman be unable to balance between paid work and parenting (Doak 1).Advertising Looking for research paper on gender studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Looking at the other side of the story, it is clear that working mothers do not benefit their families. In fact, the situation results to a less bonded family. Take for example those careers that are very involving. In such a case, the mothers are sometimes required to work overtime or even operate away from their families in cases where they go on business trips. The family is forced to do without a mother. Although many women argue that the nannies fill in the gap carrying out the responsibilities and duties that come with motherhood, it is evident that they can never fill in the gap of a mother. There are those things that nannies can attend to and those they cannot. The mutual relationship between a mother and her family is unique and can only be achieved in the presence of a mother (Venker 178). It is important to note that women are human beings too, and the environment that they work in is not stress free. Moreover, they are not favored because they are women and have familie s to take care of. They usually undertake their duties just like anybody else. They face the job challenges as everybody would. In such a situation, it is their families that suffer. Women are created differently from men and it is usually difficult to separate issues of the work place with family matters. If they had a terrible day in the office, there is a likelihood of carrying over the same in the house. The husband and the children experience a cold relationship from their mother and if it continues for a long time it may ruin relationship in the family. Balancing between work and family sometimes may be difficult. Take a situation in which a mother had a very busy day at the work place. When she gets home she is extremely tired to attend to her family. Women are humans, right? And when they get home tired like everybody would behave, they donââ¬â¢t have much to say or do with their families. They seek to rest ready to face the next day. If this goes on for a period of time then it can affect the relationship between the mother and the family negatively (De Vaus 120). Family may not only include the husband and the children but it may also include the elderly parents and the parents-in-law. It is the responsibility of the woman of the house to take care of them. It becomes worse when even when the organizations do not recognize that working mothers need to be assisted on how to manage paid work and taking care of the elder people. This is because in the past there has been systems put in place to help working mothers manage both tasks but in this case there is no system put in place to help women manage their elderly parents and their jobs as well. It becomes more challenging when the family has to relocate due to job demands. In many cases the family consisting of mother, father and children is the one that becomes mobile while the elderly are left behind. The geographical distance created simply because women are attending the paid work is not benefi cial to the larger family, considering that the elderly are sensitive just like the young children. Conclusion It is natural for many mothers with young children to feel ambivalent about working for obvious reasons. Despite debate and opposing public opinions for working mothers, mothers have entered the labor force freely and in ever greater numbers because they and their families have been made better off by that choice. These benefits are fairly obvious, such as the incomes earned by women enhance the financial security of their families; the quality and stability of marriages are improved; and children are provided with better role models by working mothers. Through my research, I have more confidence to work outside of the home because I know that my sacrifice will ultimately benefit my family and my relationship with my husband and my daughter. For myself, I hope to feel satisfaction and self-fulfillment from my career. Works Cited Baker-Dowdell, Johanna. ââ¬Å"Career Mum Bal ancing Act.â⬠Insightful writers. Informed readers. Impeachment of Andrew Johnson essays
Impeachment of Andrew Johnson essays With the assassination of Lincoln, the presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southerner named Andrew Johnson. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate Presidents. Over time there has been a controversial debate as to whether Johnson deserved to be impeached, or if it was an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to infringe upon the presidents authority. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson was politically motivated. The spirit of the Jacksonian democracy inspired Andrew Johnson. From this influence he helped found the Democratic Party in his region and became elected to the town council in 1829. After serving in his town council for two years he was elected mayor in 1831. Johnson was a strict constructionist and an advocate of states' rights who distrusted the power of government at all levels. Following his term as Mayor Johnson won elections to the Tennessee State legislature in 1835, 1839, and 1841. After serving these terms he was elected to Congress in 1843. As a member of the US House, Johnson opposed government involvement in the nations economy through tariffs and internal improvements. "In 1852 Johnson lost his seat in the US House because of gerrymandering by the Whig- dominated state legislature." (Jackson) Following his loss he came back in 1853 to win a narrow victory for governor and served two terms. In 1857, Johnson was then elected to represent Tennessee in the US Senate. "While serving in the Senate Johnson became an advocate of the Homestead Bill, which was opposed by most Southern Democrats and their slave owning, plantation constituents." (Kennedy) This issue strained the already tense relations between Johnson and the wealthy planters in western Tennessee. Eventually the party split into regional factions. Johnson made the decision to back the Southern Democratic nominee, John Breckinridge. By this time the rupture between Johnson and most ...
